I'm sure you know that isn't what I&...Gil,

I'm sure you know that isn't what I'm saying at all, of course.

Yes, you dare to bring up the Boise State/OU Fiesta Bowl fiasco - it's not a very relevant comment since they were undefeated that year. But thanks for rubbing it in about that game. I was very concerned about that game, with good reason, as it turned out. But if OU were paired in a bowl with NIU's team this past season, I'm pretty confident they would win BIG against them. If OU put NIU on their schedule, they'd be accused of padding their schedule with a patsy.

I can't speak for everyone who commented about NIU's worthiness, but OU had to settle for a non-BCS bowl game because of the FBS bending over backward to satisfy the whining of the non-AQ schools. OU likely would have lost their BCS bowl game had they been allowed to play in one, rather than the non-BCS Cotton Bowl (where they were handed their asses by TAMU). NIU's "worthiness" is less of an issue with me than is the process by which OU was robbed of their chance for a BCS bowl spot.

This blog isn't at all a suggestion about how to make CFB better - it's about the futility of trying to choose the hypothetical "best" team, even within a playoff.Chuck Doswellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03099345055614900157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2759913671101666257.post-16841587438506991072013-01-16T10:07:58.906-06:002013-01-16T10:07:58.906-06:00So what you are saying is...OU should be in the pr...So what you are saying is...OU should be in the premier bowl every time, and then when you trounce on everyone else, too bad? ;-)

I agree that the playoff system isn't the best, but in order for it to be as fair as possible, you'd have to play way more games. One could argue that my alma mater, NIU, didn't deserve a BCS bowl because we lost to Iowa. But because the other teams that were eligible lost in upsets, we got the bid. And we didn't do badly against FSU. Notre Dame, on the other hand, got their backsides handed to them.

Which is why we should just ENJOY the games, and enjoy the upsets. Whether you think that NIU or X team shouldn't have been in there, enjoy the possibility. It's fresh opponents, and dare I remind OU of what happened to Boise State, even though they were roundly criticized as totally unworthy? And dduring that game, when was the last time you heard announcers stop calling a play because they were so shell-shocked as to what they were seeing?

I'm not saying the system couldn't be made better; it can and it should be. But sense (I hope!) shows that if it takes just one gust of wind or a dropped ball to ruin your season...you have issues much greater than that to concern yourselves with.

Gilbert SebensteGilberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05267525662313103148noreply@blogger.com
