Quite boring, but very important stuff. Back then (the early-1980s) things like ENSO, and the AMO were very new abstract discoveries. Climate Science was a very small, but specialized field. There were no rock stars like there are now.

One thing I think people should understand is that most of Climate Science and Paleo Dendrochronoly are really advanced fields of statistical analysis. There is not one area of Climate Science, or for that matter, temperature analysis that does not require an advanced knowledge of statistics. People should keep this in mind when looking at temperature or precip anomalies, or temperature reconstructions. The use of stats doesn't make those studies right or wrong -as a matter of fact without statistics these fields would go no where. But the lay reader should be aware of this. Theories are great, but it is how the data is mined and arranged that a "signal" is derived.Jeromehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03626011064246752303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2759913671101666257.post-44739492485710121782010-04-07T07:40:33.690-05:002010-04-07T07:40:33.690-05:00I started to comment here, but it got so long that...I started to comment here, but it got so long that I made it a blog post instead:

http://not-that-sane.blogspot.com/2010/04/scientific-expertise-does-not-carry.htmlLakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16177723973206020679noreply@blogger.com
